Professor Derek Johnson Is Co-Winner of Outstanding Young Scholar Award

Communication Arts Professor Derek Johnson is the recent co-recipient of the Outstanding Young Scholar Award from the International Communication Association’s (ICA) Popular Communication Division.  

ICA’s website states that “the award honors a scholar no more than seven years past receipt of the Ph.D. for a body of work that has contributed to knowledge of the field of communication and shows promise for continued development.” In Professor Johnson’s case, that work includes his book Media Franchising: Creative License and Collaboration in the Culture Industries, and two edited collections, A Companion to Authorship and Making Media Work: Cultures of Management in the Entertainment Industries. Additionally, Professor Johnson’s many journal articles and book chapters bolster his research catalog, with the most recent articles being “’May the Force be with Katie’: Pink Media Franchising and the Post-Feminist Politics of HerUniverse” in Feminist Media Studies and “Figuring Identity: Media Licensing and the Racialization of LEGO Bodies” in International Journal of Cultural Studies.
