The 33rd Annual Conference of the Association of Politics and the Life Sciencestakes place at UW-Madison on the 23rd and 24th of October. The keynote will be delivered by Professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson, who is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. An alumna of Communication Arts (Ph.D ’72), Professor Jamieson has authored or co-authored over a dozen books and received numerous teaching awards. Her keynote, entitledSidestepping Rhetorical Quicksand in Debates in the Life Sciences, examines the ways in which inartfully chosen words and images sewed public confusion about ‘mad cow’ disease and the transmissibility of Ebola and GMOs, and will suggest criteria for grounding scientific communication in clarifying language.
Professor Jamieson’s keynote will take place Friday, October 23rd 12:30-1:30p.m. in the Northwoods room in Union South and is open to the public.
