Social Media and Your Job Search

Can social media networks such as Twitter and LinkedIn help you find a job? In a workshop in mid-November, a group of undergraduates heard from Com Arts Advisor, Amy Schultz, and Historical Humanities Career Advisor, Lindsay Williamson, about how to best use these social media networks as they begin their internship and job search. If you missed the workshop, here are some highlights:

How do employers use social media?

  • To post job openings
  • To search for and recruit candidates
  • To search candidates’ backgrounds, professional connections
  • To showcase company awards and achievements

What is Twitter?

“Twitter is a real-time information network that connects you to the latest stories, ideas, opinions and news about what you find interesting” (https://twitter.com/about). Since you choose who to follow, all the information you receive is tailored to your interests! 

How can I find a job using Twitter?

  • Follow companies that you’d like to work for and other professionals in your field
  • Tweet what you are reading/watching/blogging about, share industry news or articles, ask a professional in your field to review your resume
  • Use industry keywords in your tweets (e.g. #pr, #marketing, #recentgrad)
  • Create an interesting Twitter bio that reflects who you are and what you’re hoping to accomplish (a mini elevator pitch)
  • Participate in twitter chats and engage with other professionals in your field 

What is LinkedIn?

How can I find a job using LinkedIn?

  • Make sure your profile is complete – use the wizard if you are just starting out
  • Join groups that reflect your interests both personally and professionally
  • Start a discussion or post a link within your groups to brand yourself within the industry
  • Search for jobs within the group using the Jobs tab or via the Jobs for Students and Recent Graduates
