Every other Wednesday at noon, listen to Professor Karma Chavez’s voice reach far past her classroom on WORT-FM 89.9’s “A Public Affair.” “A Public Affair” is a daily, hour-long segment that “aims to engage listeners in a conversation on social, cultural, and political issues of importance,” WORT 89.9’s website reports, featuring interviews with guests ranging from “local activists and scholars to notable national and international figures.”
Chavez got involved with “A Public Affair” at a friend’s recommendation, considering the show’s far-reaching format a perfect opportunity to “give perspectives typically not featured on public or national radio a voice,” she explains. She most enjoys discussing questions of race, poverty, and internationality. Although her career is filled with memorable moments, Chavez picks her interview with David Bacon, a celebrated neoliberalist interested in Mexico-US relations, as her personal standout.
You can listen to “A Public Affair” every day at noon on 89.9fm, or live online at wortfm.org. If you know of anyone doing something special, on or off campus, and would like to hear their story told on “A Public Affair,” please feel free to email Prof. Chavez at krchavez@wisc.edu.
