Emeritus Jacques Ledoux Professor of Film Studies David Bordwell and Department of Communication Arts Honorary Fellow Kristin Thompson are again in the spotlight of mainstream media, this time in an article by Manohla Dargis in the New York Times. The article, in the “Movies” section of the site and titled “You Can Judge a Book by Its Movie”, explores Bordwell and Thompson’s unique and unquestionably enthusiastic approach to film criticism and scholarship:
Rather than just gassing on about his interpretations (as reviewers can do) or starting with a theory and finding a set of movies that support that theory (as scholars will do), he looks to the movies first, analyzing what is happening at the level of sight and sound, then extrapolating meaning.
