SM Fleming is a Film PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research examines the intersections of sound, music, and narrative across film, television, and digital media. She is particularly interested in how audiences engage with difficult or alternative forms of storytelling. SM’s broader work considers how technological changes shape media production and consumption and the ways in which spectators navigate the tension between both challenge and pleasure in complex narratives. Another major research interest for her is genre, particularly horror and science fiction. SM’s CA 313 course on horror films was named a top 10 UW Madison summer course in 2024.
