As a former recipient of the Comm Arts Industry Summer Scholarship, I moved out to LA immediately upon graduation and have been working steadily in film & television production ever since. Most recently, this year I won a Primetime Emmy Award for my work as a Field Coordinator on Undercover Boss. As of July, I have been hired full-time as an in-house Production Manager for Ryan Seacrest Productions. It's very easy to say that I couldn't have done any of this without the UW Comm Arts program! I live in Chicago, in the South Loop neighborhood, which is near the lake and just south of downtown. I have been a freelance photographer for 20+ years, and also write for a local newspaper at the moment. I was a realtor for six years during this time (retired a year ago, but may be back--if there is a housing market!) and have long wanted to go back to school. I have taken numerous post-graduate credits, no advanced degrees as of yet. I am considering grad school next fall: a master's in counseling. We'll see! I have a son, 18, who just started college this fall at Ohio Wesleyan University, and a 14-year-old daughter who is a freshman this fall in high school.

For close to four years I served as U.S. Senator Russ Feingold's Deputy Press Secretary in Washington, D.C. After the Senator lost his mid-term re-election bid, I transitioned into the public relations sector and have moved back to the midwest. I now work in APCO Worldwide's Chicago office as a consultant for healthcare clients. APCO is a communications, stakeholder engagement and business strategy firm with 32 offices around the world. In my current role, I use my strong command of media relations, stakeholder communications and patient advocacy to provide account support and expertise for corporations, non-profit organizations, health insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies.

After getting my degree from UW I worked for a couple of years and went back to school to get my MSSW from the University of Texas. I've been working in the field in a number of capacities over the past 25+ years. For the last 20 years I've been working in the Employee Assistance field. One of the things I've been doing professionally for the past 15 years is working as a trainer. Clearly my communications background has meshed well with my social work degree!

Stern, Emily

Since graduating in 2007, I've been fortunate enough to build a wonderfully rewarding non-profit career. After spending some time abroad immediately after graduation, I relocated to Illinois to take an AmeriCorps national service position with a housing rehab non-profit in Aurora, Illinois. After my 11 month service term, I became the organization's first Executive Director. In my three year tenure, I was able to increase the organization's services significantly, expand its community reach and increase the budget by 200%. Most importantly, we were able to provide a safe, healthy and accessible home to 50+ low-income individuals each year, giving the type of home that every person deserves. A year and a half ago, I relocated to Milwaukee to join the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra as their first full-time Development Director. MYSO is the largest youth symphony in the country, serving more than 900 local youth each year. MYSO's most recent initiatives has been primarily focused on urban outreach programs, bringing music education and training to previously under-served children. At a time of rapidly diminishing music programming in schools, these efforts become increasingly important. As the primary fundraiser for the organization, I assist in reaching our $1.5 million budget each year. Additionally, we just culminated a $2 million scholarship campaign for low-income students advancing into higher level MYSO ensembles. Helping to preserve music opportunities for our community's youth is such an important effort that I'm proud to be a part of. Outside of these jobs, I serve as the President and Chairman of the Brittingham Viking Organization, an international scholarship program for UW-Madison and Scandinavian students. Now in it's 59th year, the BVO has nearly 400 alumni throughout the world who work together to manage and operate the organization's administration.
