Lehman, Rosemary M.

Dr. Lehman's third book with Jossey-Bass, Wiley Press is co-authored with Prof. Simone C. O. Conceição and will be published in October. Motivating and Retaining Online Students: Research-Based Strategies That Work, addresses the challenge for educational institutions in the rapidly changing teaching and learning environment. Using our years of online experience, the authors have designed this book to help increase and improve the retention of online students and thereby increase the overall retention rates for educational institutions. The book is filled with empirical research from the authors’ study of motivation and retention strategies that can reduce online learner dropout. It provides effective online strategies that help minimize student dropout, increase student retention, and support student learning management. It puts the focus on issues of course design, student engagement and motivation, and institutional, instructional, and informal support for online students.

This is the third book for the authors in the Jossey-Bass Guides to Online Teaching and Learning. Their first two books are: Creating a Sense of Presence in Online Teaching: How to “Be There” for Distance Learners and
Managing Online Instructor Workload: Strategies for Finding Balance and Success.

After graduating, I took a full-time job with LiquidThread, a branded entertainment firm here in Chicago. My education within the Communication Arts department has served me multiple times, as much of what I do focuses on entertainment properties, communication and production. Furthermore, having taken a few Marketing courses through the business school, I couldn't be happier that I chose a Comm Arts degree instead. I plan to eventually move closer to production, ideally in the documentary film industry and am confident that my education will continue to serve me well.

The PhB was a godsend for me, since it enabled me to put together a program of courses that kept me happy and active. I was interested in Drama, which was not then a department: I was involved in 11 productions---in one capacity or another---in my freshman year. I've had a long and rewarding career as a writer for radio, television and film. But my first production was an original drama called Red Snow in 1948 on WHA. I don't believe WHA had ever produced a student drama production prior to mine. I still have a tape of it somewhere. It featured Gerald Hiken and Cliff Owen. With an original music score.
