Student Scholarship & Paid Internship Opportunities

If you are currently an undergraduate student majoring in Comm Arts, there are numerous scholarship and paid internship opportunities available to you. Among those currently on offer this semester are the Charline M. Wackman Awards, which are available to majors who are “bona fide residents of the State of Wisconsin” and who will be continuing students in the fall. Wackman scholars are selected in the spring and the scholarships are distributed in the fall. Awards are granted in a variety of categories including: high achievement (a 3.25 or higher GPA is required); superior projects (senior thesis proposal, film or video production, or creative writing assignment); and service to the department (volunteer duties, leadership activities, or otherwise promoting the department’s objectives and mission).

The Christopher Neal Heinlein Memorial Scholarships are also available to Comm Arts majors who will be continuing students in the fall. Students who come from East Coast urban areas will be given preference. Recipients are selected in the spring and the scholarships are distributed in the fall. Applicants must demonstrate academic or artistic achievement, financial need, and good nature, kindness, humor, hard work, arts interest, and personableness.

In addition to these two scholarships, Comm Arts is proud to offer a paid summer internship position at CBS Television in Los Angeles. The CBS Network Programming Internship provides one promising student a ground-floor look inside the daily operations of a major television network. This internship is based in the Program Planning and Scheduling Department at CBS Television’s headquarters in Hollywood, where the schedule for the entire CBS television network is shaped. Interns work with program development, current programming, late night, research, daytime, media relations, sales, marketing owned stations, affiliate relations, and CBS news and CBS sports on a daily basis. To learn more, read our recent news story about the internship. This internship scholarship is generously provided through the Communication Arts Alumni Internship Fund.

The deadline for the Wackman awards, Heinlein scholarships, and CBS internship scholarship is Thursday, March 22nd. You can apply through the Scholarships@UW-Madison portal located in the Student Center section of your MyUW page. If you have any questions, please contact the Comm Arts undergraduate advisor, Mary Rossa.

Beyond the department, Comm Arts students are eligible for College of Letters & Science (L&S) scholarships as well.
