Non-UW-Madison Study Abroad Programs
Before initiating study abroad plans, read the information posted at the Office of Admissions. Their web page includes everything you need to know about receiving transfer credit from programs abroad and reentry admission to UW-Madison once your program ends.
Information about non UW-Madison study abroad programs is also available in the Study Abroad Resource Room, 250 Bascom Hall.
Course Equivalencies: Check the UW Admissions web site to see if a course equivalency list has been created for your program. Use the Course Equivalency Request Form for courses and programs that are not on the list. If you believe a course that you completed abroad for which you received Comm Arts elective credit should count towards a specific requirement, such as a theory, history, and/or criticism course, submit a course syllabus to the Comm Arts advisor for review after the course appears on your UW-Madison student record.
Signatures for study abroad forms: The Advisor Approval Form from your study abroad program will most likely need to be replaced with the UW-Madison Program Approval Request Form and completed by the UW Admissions Office and/or the Registrar's Office, depending on the information being requested. Please see the instructions at the Office of Admissions for credit approval forms. The advisor isn't authorized to sign forms that ask if UW-Madison will accept transfer credits.
Requesting an Exception to the Residency Requirement: Students may request an exception to the 30 credit residency requirement by submitting an online request to the L&S Academic Deans Office. After reviewing your request, an L&S Dean will notify you if your request has been approved or denied.
Advising: Meet with the advisor before you go abroad to review your remaining requirements and to ask any questions you have about reading the DARS report. The more information you can provide in terms of what courses you’ll be completing abroad and their UW-Madison equivalencies the more specific the discussion can be in terms of your remaining requirements. The advisor won’t be able to complete a DARS review for you through email or over the phone, so be sure to review your academic plan with the advisor prior to going abroad.
Re-entry Term: If you think you might complete an internship in the summer, you should select summer as your re-entry term. Although Admissions will allow you to change your re-entry term, the switch may take a week to process and you may not be able to meet the deadlines for arranging and registering for internship credit.
