Expertise and Activities
My research interests include French film of all eras, women's history and gender studies, and the intersections between film and other forms of popular culture. Currently I am writing a book on Agnès Varda's key films, her working methods, and her films' reception. Another ongoing book project is a study of 1950s French film culture.
Every June, I teach a three-week study abroad seminar in Paris sponsored by the UW International Academic Programs. Students stay in a residence in the Bastille neighborhood and attend class each morning on the history of French film. in the afternoons, we take advantage of the rich array of films screeened in the cinemas of Paris, including classic Hollywood, silent, avant-garde and international cinema. We also enjoy class visits by people working in the industry, such as critics, directors, and exhibitors.
In 2005 the group spent a morning talking with director Agnès Varda at her production company.
