Expertise and Activities
Responsible, as Assistant Director, for the general administration of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research (WCFTR), for relations with donors of films, photographs and papers to the WCFTR, and for accessioning and processing collections, especially manuscript collections. Also Coordinator of the Cinematheque, responsible (with the front-of-house manager) for its day-to-day administration.
My principal area of research is the early cinema in Europe and America, on which I have published a number of articles in Screen, Cinema Journal, and Film History, and (with Lea Jacobs) the book Theatre to Cinema: Stage Pictorialism and the Early Feature Film (Oxford University Press, 1997). Much of my current work is on performance in early cinema and stage acting in the same period. My most recent publication in this area is “Alternation in Vitagraph Films, 1906-1909,” Cinéma & Cie, 9 (Fall 2007): 43-59.
