How To Apply

Application Deadline: December 15th

Who can I ask questions or seek information from?
Graduate Program Coordinator
Department of Communication Arts
6134 Vilas Hall
821 University Avenue
Madison, WI 53706

Where do I send my completed application materials?
Please use this direct link to submit your online application and fee (credit card or debit card), including the "Record of Residence" portion of the Graduate School Application for Admission.  The Graduate School will now only accept applications online.

After completing and sending the electronic application, please mail the following supporting documents to the department address above:

1. A statement of purpose for graduate study
2. Two official copies of undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts showing all previous coursework
3. Three letters of recommendation from academic sources
4. A 5-10 page writing sample (in English)
5. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results. (International students, please see note below.)  UW-Madison is Institution # 1846, dept. 4599
6. Valid TOEFL or IELTS scores for international students whose native language is not English
7. A curricululm vita

It is very helpful and will speed up the application process if you submit as much information as possible in sealed envelopes in the same packet with your statement of purpose and writing sample. However, individual letters of recommendation and transcripts can be mailed directly to the Graduate Coordinator if the issuing institution prefers that method.

Your application is not complete until your application fee is paid and Communication Arts has received all the required documents listed above. Applications that are complete by December 15 and are included in the initial review, will be automatically considered for a teaching assistantship. There is no separate application for a teaching assistantship.

Make sure you check out these Graduate School Links:

Note to International Students: Based on information we have received from the ETS that computer-based scores from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea were tainted in 2001 and 2002, we will not accept computerized GRE results from these countries in those years. Please arrange to take either a paper-based test or a secure computer-based examination dated after July 14, 2003, before you apply to this program.
